    Hiking

Arriving at Lake Baccio from Lake Santo in Modena, you will find some beech trees of considerable size: they are the "sentinels" of the lake, centuries-old "guards" of one of the most beautiful views of the Modena Apennines.

Always enchanting place, in winter with snow it's super!
A must see if you are in the Lago Santo area of Modena: from the car park (for a fee) it is an easy 20 minute walk.

Embark on a moderate hike from Lago Santo to Monte Rondinaio, a journey covering 4.1 miles (6.6 km) with an elevation gain of 1360 feet (415 metres). This route typically takes around 2 hours and 53 minutes to complete. You'll begin by tracing a path through a cool beech forest, enjoying the shade as you make your way towards Lago Baccio. As you ascend, the scenery transforms, opening up to reveal a dramatic mountain landscape crowned by Monte Giovo and Monte Rondinaio. The final push to the summit involves navigating rocky terrain and patches of wild blueberries, leading you to the cross at the peak of Monte Rondinaio.

To begin your adventure, head to the Lago Santo Modenese parking area, where paid parking is available for your convenience. The CAI Trail 523 officially starts right from the nearby Rifugio Vittoria, making it easy to find your way. Consider starting your hike early in the day to make the most of the cooler temperatures and ensure ample time to enjoy the views. While the trail is generally well-marked, it's always wise to check local conditions before you go, especially regarding weather changes at higher elevations.

This trail offers a unique perspective on the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, showcasing one of its most beautiful areas. From the summit of Monte Rondinaio, you might even catch a glimpse of the distant Tyrrhenian Sea on clear days, a truly rewarding sight after your climb. The route is part of a larger network of trails, providing a deeper connection to the region's natural environment and its stunning mountain landscapes. Keep an eye out for the stone cairns that help mark the path along the more exposed sections of the ridge.
