This theater has been in the heart of Amsterdam since 1774: The City Theater, or the "Stadsschouwburg" as the locals call it, is immediately recognizable as the most striking building on Leidseplein. It is home to the "Toneelgroep Amsterdam" and after the merger in 2018 they will continue under the name Internationaal Theater Amsterdam.

Leidseplein - where the road to Leiden once began - was created in the 17th century as a gathering place for carriages, carts and horses that provided transport. Farmers from outside also parked their horse-drawn carriages there. The square attracts thousands of tourists every year.
