He was the freedom fighter of Friesland. He mainly took issue with the authority of the Saxons, the emperor and the Dutch "from across the Zuiderzee". A statue has been erected for him in Kimswerd. His legendary cousin Wijerd Jelckama and his family also lived in Kimswerd and the surrounding area.
