The bridge and the associated Staigstraße represent an early form of bypass and were originally intended for rapid troop movements. It diverted traffic into the Pfinz Valley above the church, bypassing the town center. This function is now performed by the Grötzingen Tunnel.
Explanation at the bridge: "Until 1875, all traffic into the Pfinz Valley passed over the Staig. The bridge was built in 1706 at the request of Margravine Augusta by Margrave Ludwig."
