A beautiful medieval gate, rebuilt in 1760 – 71 years after its destruction by fire. Remnants of the city wall can still be seen towards Turmberg along the path "Am Stadtgraben" (At the City Moat).

The Basel Gate likely dates back to the 14th century and secured access from the south until the mid-19th century. It was named for its role as the gateway to Basel, where the Margraves maintained a secondary residence (city palace).

The Basel Gate Tower in Durlach is the last remaining city gate of the former margrave's residence. The gate tower is a protected cultural monument.
The gate is named after the city of Basel because it was formerly the entrance to the postal and military road to Basel.
