After 1815 Fortress Weesp was part of the New Dutch Water Line, but was incorporated into the Amsterdam Defense Line in 1892. The fort at Ossenmarkt was built to defend both banks of the Vecht, the locks and the Amsterdam-Hilversum railway line with its bridge over the Vecht. The fortress tower on the Ossenmarkt dates from 1861. Later, an enclosing wall was built on the east side and the moat was filled in. In 1983-1985 this wall was excavated and the moat and bridge were restored.
