Kwaremont is a charming artists' village on the slopes of the 111-meter-high Kwaremontberg. Since the 1940s, artists have been inspired by the village and the surrounding landscape. Today, you'll still find several galleries here. The whitewashed St. Amandus Church, with its neo-Baroque altar and 17th-century artwork, is also highly recommended. And if you're hungry, enjoy French-Belgian cuisine in a warm, welcoming atmosphere at restaurant 't Monument.

Kwaremont is an artists' village with a particularly picturesque charm. Artists first came here in the 1940s, finding inspiration in its unique atmosphere. Studios sprang up and galleries began to appear. In the 1970s and 80s, Kwaremont—the 111-meter-high hill that gave the village its name—became a popular destination for day trips.

Kwaremont – from the Square Mountain to cycling myth

The name Kwaremont sounds like pure cycling history today, but its origins go much further back. The name is a Romance formation, derived from the Old French "quarre" – square or angular – and "mont", meaning mountain. Literally, Kwaremont means the ‘Square Mountain’ or ‘Angular Mountain’.

This is no accidental name. As early as Roman times, an important main road ran here over the ridges, connecting settlements like Blicquy and Bavay with the Scheldt. Soldiers, merchants, and travellers passed through this landscape and gave the distinctively shaped hill its recognisable name.
