The written sources name Maria and Agnes as patrons of side altars in the church before the Reformation. They do not provide any information about the original main namesake of the church, and the vernacular has not preserved any memory of him. Since 1979 the congregation has called their church Martinskirche, since all other early churches in the area were consecrated to Saint Martin.

The church is named after Martin of Tours.
The church, at least its tower, has been documented since 1075.

Its fortified church formed the center of the Battle of Döffingen on August 23, 1388, between an army of the Swabian League of Cities and troops of Count Eberhard II of Württemberg.

The nave of the hall church was rebuilt in 1516 and, after its destruction in the Thirty Years' War, was rebuilt again from 1634–49 [...].
