The Kiechelberg with its St. Daniels Chapel used to belong to the Sonnenburg monastery in the Pustertal and the wine for the Benedictine nuns was made here.
Many monasteries from the southern German-speaking area had and still have properties in South Tyrol and therefore their own vineyards. These not only provided good sacramental wine but also wine for everyday monastic life. The Kiechelberg still has very good Pinot Noir today.
