Gowbarrow Fell’s summit region is a characterful plateau of rocky knolls that overlook the famously beautiful Ullswater. An adventure to this Wainwright summit can also include a visit to one of the national park’s most beloved waterfalls, Aira Force, before following Aira Beck, which bounds the fell on its western side.

A delightful adventure above the famously beautiful Ullswater

There are quite a few routes to Gowbarrow Fell’s summit. The area, known as Gowbarrow Park, is owned by the National Trust and there are a number of good paths and picnic spots. The easiest and shortest approach is from the village of Dockray to the west, though by far the most interesting ascent is by way of Aira Force.

The waterfall is accessed from a car park on Ullswater’s northern shore and makes for a lovely little amble in itself. Gorgeous woodland surrounds the tumbling Aira Beck and a number of charming bridges allow you to cross in the vicinity of the main, thundering cascade.

There are other routes to Gowbarrow Fell from the north and east and these are likely to be more peaceful than those from the west. The path from Watermillock, taking you beneath Meldrums Little and Great, is a very pleasant walk with lovely woodland and picturesque lake views.

Despite its position above Ullswater, very little of the lake can be seen from its summit because of the intervening ground. The view southwest beyond Patterdale to the shapely mass of St Sunday Crag is excellent, backed by the broad, eastern ridges of the Fairfield massif.

    Hiking

Gowbarrow Fell is a gloriously accessible Wainwright summit on the northern shore of Ullswater. It can be combined with a hike to Aira Force, the famous waterfall that tumbles down a ravine on its south western flanks.

The fell's summit area is dotted with craggy outcrops and rewards with awesome Ullswater views to the south and to the Mell Fells and Blencathra in the north.

Beautiful views looking down over Ullswater.

If you're doing the Ullswater way, it is downhill the rest of the way down to Glenridding (mostly!)

Embark on a moderate hike along the Aira Force and Gowbarrow Park Trail, a 4.3-mile (7.0 km) loop that typically takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete. You will climb 983 feet (300 metres) as you explore diverse landscapes, starting with the impressive 65-foot Aira Force waterfall plunging through ancient woodlands. As you ascend towards Gowbarrow Fell, the path opens up, revealing expansive views across Ullswater, the second-largest lake in the Lake District. From the Gowbarrow Fell summit, you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding fells, making the effort worthwhile.

When planning your visit, be aware that while paths around Aira Force are generally well-maintained, the terrain towards Gowbarrow Fell can be more challenging. Expect steep sections and potential mud or bracken, especially during certain times of the year. Gowbarrow Fell itself can also be boggy, so wear appropriate footwear. Parking is available for the Aira Force hike, but always check local conditions before you go to ensure a smooth experience.

This circular route offers a rewarding experience for hikers seeking varied scenery within Lake District National Park. The trail's unique combination of a powerful waterfall, ancient woodlands, and open fellside with sweeping lake views sets it apart. It provides a fantastic opportunity to witness the dramatic natural beauty of the region, from the cascading waters to the expansive vistas over Ullswater and the surrounding fells.
