At great expense for the community, Prince-Bishop Julius Echter had Euerdorf fortified with a defensive wall with a ditch in front. In the years 1582 to 1586 three gateways were built, two of them tower-like. These now secured the village. Euerdorf was to be developed into a Würzburg administrative center as a counterpoint to Hammelburg in Fulda. It received the status of a country town. The towers were manned day and night with full-time tower keepers.
