The "Bocca di Valle, Piana delle Melle e Valle delle Monache – giro ad anello" is a difficult mountain biking loop in Majella National Park. This 8.1-mile (13.0 km) route, with 2192 feet (668 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes 1 hour and 41 minutes to complete. You will ride through diverse terrain, including unpaved roads, asphalt, and technical singletracks, often requiring good riding skills. Immerse yourself in dense vegetation and imposing beech forests as you follow the fresh valley of the Vesola torrent. A highlight is the spectacular 30-meter high San Giovanni Waterfalls, which you will encounter along the way. At higher altitudes, the landscape opens up, offering panoramic views that can extend to the sea on clear days.
This challenging mountain biking trail requires good physical preparation and technical skills. The Piana delle Melle is a great starting point for many trails in the area, offering amenities like a park and snack shops. Along the route, particularly in Valle delle Monache, you will find an Alpine hut, a picnic area, and fountains to refill your water bottles. Be prepared for varied terrain, including steep climbs that may require you to dismount and push your bike. While a specific variant, the "MTB 30 Valle delle Monache," is described as easy for downhill sections, the main loop is considered difficult.
Considered one of the most popular mountain bike trails near Guardiagrele, this loop offers a complete experience of Majella National Park's diverse natural landscapes. The trail is notable for showcasing unique flora, including the rare carnivorous plant Pinguicola fiorii, which is endemic to Majella. You will also pass through a protected floral area boasting beech trees, black hornbeams, opal maples, and bright yellow laburnums. The Piana delle Melle itself is a wonderful location within the park, offering a great base for further exploration.
