The history of the town of Entrecasteaux begins in the eleventh century AD with an old fortress. This served to guard a then important route through the valley. A new castle was built on the site of this fortress in the sixteenth century. A small town soon arose around this castle, because people from the surrounding area decided to live close to the castle for protection.
