    Hiking

The Gillan Creek runs parallel to the Helford River and flows into the sea on the southern side of Dennis Head. There used to be a ferry across the harbour, you can still get a lift across but it's less formal. The South West Coast Path walks around the creek rather than crossing.

    Running

Gillan Creek has long been a place of human settlement. Signs of an oyster bed dating back to medieval times has even been found in the mud.

Dennis Head, Gillan Creek & Penarvon Cove loop from Helford — The Lizard

Embark on the Dennis Head, Gillan Creek & Penarvon Cove loop from Helford, a moderate 6.0-mile (9.7 km) hike that takes about 2 hours and 37 minutes to complete. You will experience a diverse landscape with 442 feet (135 metres) of elevation gain, winding through ancient woodlands, open fields, and along the rugged coastline. From Dennis Head, you can enjoy expansive views of the Helford River, Gillan Creek, and the English Channel, before descending to secluded spots like Penarvon Cove, a hidden gem surrounded by trees.

This trail is best enjoyed when conditions are dry, as some paths can become muddy, especially in shaded woodland areas. While the research does not specify parking or public transport details, planning your visit to historic villages like Helford or Manaccan could offer convenient starting points. Always check local conditions before you head out, as the varied terrain includes rocky steps and narrow sections that require sure-footedness.

The Helford River area is renowned for its unique ancient woodlands that meet the sea, a rare ecological feature. This region also holds historical significance, with the romantic and tranquil ambiance of the Helford River and its hidden creeks famously inspiring Daphne Du Maurier's novel, "Frenchman's Creek." You will also pass through or near historic villages such as St Anthony-in-Meneage, one of Cornwall's earliest Christian sites, adding a rich cultural layer to your outdoor adventure.
