Anyone looking at the evidence of mining history today should not forget the dangers to which miners have always been exposed.
Coal mining was particularly dangerous in a seam in which previous generations had left coal. Sometimes the loosened rock layers collapsed there when you worked in them again. There were also unknown cavities from which water could break out.
The memorial stone commemorates miners who had an accident here in the 1950s. Their names are representative of all those who lost their lives underground in the previous centuries.
