The shallow bay in the Saaler Bodden, known as the Werre, was cut off from the Bodden by diking and has been used as grassland ever since. A part of the Werre polder is now being renatured with a permanent overflow area. The overflow area is limited to the north and west by a dam. The barrage ensures flood protection for the remaining polder areas.
