    340m

Embark on a moderate hike along the Appalachian Trail from Carver's Gap to Grassy Ridge Bald, a route known for its open, treeless balds. You will experience an alpine-like environment, with native grasses and heath shrubs covering the landscape, offering expansive 360-degree views of the Appalachian Mountains. This 4.8-mile (7.7 km) journey involves an elevation gain of 1103 feet (336 metres), typically taking around 2 hours and 28 minutes to complete. The trail leads you across Round Bald and Jane Bald Summit before reaching the impressive Grassy Ridge Bald, providing a unique high-elevation experience.

The hike starts at Carver's Gap, where you can usually find parking for your vehicle. Since much of the route crosses exposed balds, be ready for strong winds and weather that can change quickly. It is always wise to check the weather forecast before you head out and to wear layers of clothing. This will help you stay comfortable regardless of the conditions you encounter on the trail.

This section of the Appalachian Trail is part of the larger Pisgah National Forest, showcasing a unique high-elevation ecosystem. The treeless grassy balds are a distinctive feature of the Roan Highlands, setting this landscape apart from typical Appalachian forests. In spring, you might see vibrant wildflowers adding color to the native grasses and heath shrubs. This trail offers a chance to explore a truly special environment within the mountains.
