Embark on a challenging touring cycling adventure through the heart of Puglia with the Castel del Monte and Alta Murgia Aqueduct Loop. This difficult route spans 47.0 miles (75.6 km) and includes a significant elevation gain of 2207 feet (673 metres), taking approximately 5 hours and 10 minutes to complete. You will pedal across limestone plateaus and past vast olive fields, with the iconic 13th-century Castel del Monte often visible, its unique octagonal shape a constant landmark.
To make the most of your ride, plan your visit outside the peak summer months, especially avoiding July and August when temperatures are highest. Be prepared for varied terrain; while some sections are paved, you will encounter unpaved segments where you might need to dismount and push your bike. Given that road conditions in Puglia can sometimes be less than ideal, careful navigation is highly recommended throughout your journey.
This route offers a deep dive into the natural and historical tapestry of the Alta Murgia National Park.
