The Rhine-Herne Canal was built at the beginning of the 20th century and was completed and put into operation in 1914 with a total of 6 locks. In the historical crime novel by Peter Kersken "IM SCHATTEN DER ZECHE" this is described very vividly. In the meantime, the Essen-Dellwig lock has been omitted due to subsidence since 1980.
