The town of Themar has been documented as Tagamri since 796. Thanks to the intact town wall with its seven watchtowers, it was nicknamed the "Town of Seven Towers". The Henneberg counts built a castle here, around which Themar is said to have been founded. During the Thirty Years' War, most of the old houses were destroyed after looting and arson. As a result, Themar does not have a completely intact townscape, and there are also many empty buildings. Another special feature is the church, where Johann Sebastian Bach's uncle worked as an organist.
