The Deutsche Tor is one of the most striking historical buildings in Landau in der Pfalz – and practically the best-known relic of the old fortress city.

In Landau, there were only two entrances to the fortress town: the northeastern gate of the Vauban fortress of Landau, the German Gate (built 1688-1687) with the Untertorplatz (lower gate square). Its gable depicts a rather grim Louis XIV looking toward Germany.

The north-eastern gate of the Vauban fortress from 1688 to 1691. It is identical in construction to the French gate. Both gates were the main entrance to the fortress. The adjoining city walls were removed during the demolition.
