Perhaps the capital of Alta Valtellina and home to the Alpine Ski World Championships in 1985 and 2005, Bormio is one of the most famous tourist resorts in Italy, both in winter and in summer. Seven times home to a stage finish of the Giro d'Italia, Bormio is the meeting point of four valleys: Valdidentro, Valfurva, Valle del Braulio and Valdisotto.

    Doppio Stelvio – loop tour

The Doppio Stelvio – loop tour is an iconic and exceptionally challenging touring bicycle route, often called a "holy grail of climbs" for cyclists. This difficult 65.2-mile (105.0 km) route involves ascending the Passo dello Stelvio twice in a single day, gaining an astounding 10754 feet (3278 metres) of elevation. You will experience impressive landscapes of the Bormio valley, alpine greenery, and views of glaciers and the Ortler massif, especially along the famous 48 hairpin turns on the Prato side.

Completing this loop typically takes around 8 hours and 48 minutes, requiring very good fitness due to its length, steep gradients, and high altitude. The trail primarily consists of paved surfaces, though some segments may have compacted gravel or cobblestones, and road surfaces can be rough on descents. The high altitude of the Stelvio Pass summit, reaching over 2,750 meters, means less oxygen and unpredictable weather, even in summer.

This route is deeply ingrained in cycling history, having been a pivotal stage in the Giro d'Italia many times. Tackling both sides of such a legendary mountain in one day offers an immense sense of achievement. The annual "Stelvio Bike Day" closes the roads to motorized traffic, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in this bucket-list experience without vehicle interference.
