The southern Karlsbrücke, also known as Obere Karlsbrücke, connects Trödelmarktinsel with the Lorenzer Altstadt south of the Pegnitz.
The current sandstone arch bridge was built in 1728.
Originally, the structure was named Kaiserbrücke or Elisabethbrücke in honor of the then Emperor Charles VI or his wife Elisabeth.
In the middle of the bridge, two obelisks are erected. The eastern one is crowned by a war or imperial eagle with outstretched wings, the western one by a dove of peace with folded wings and an olive branch in its beak.
