The Mâture-Arras Loop Trail immerses you in a unique hiking experience within the Pyrenees National Park, blending history with wild nature. The route takes you along the famous Chemin de la Mâture, a path carved into the rock offering spectacular views of the Gorges d'Enfer, and provides an opportunity to admire the imposing Fort du Portalet. This is a moderate hike spanning 7.1 miles (11.4 km) with an elevation gain of 2281 feet (695 meters), taking approximately 4 hours and 14 minutes, ideal for those seeking a rewarding challenge with diverse landscapes, from beech forests to exposed cliffs.
To plan your visit, note that this route is not recommended in winter or during rainy conditions, as the terrain can become very slippery, especially on the steep and rocky sections. It is advisable to wear sturdy hiking boots and carry trekking poles, particularly for the descent after the Col d'Arras. The starting point is in Borce, a charming medieval village, and there's a café, the Béloute Café, which can be a good stop for refreshments.
What truly sets this route apart is the Chemin de la Mâture, a historic 1200-meter passage hand-excavated in the 18th century to transport timber for the French royal navy. This section, though wide, can induce vertigo due to its exposure. Furthermore, the trail is part of the famous GR10 route, adding significant historical and cultural value, offering a fascinating perspective on ancient engineering and the natural beauty of the Pyrenees.
