This trail takes around 9 hours and 5 minutes to complete, leading you through varied and often technical terrain. You will navigate narrow mule tracks, steep rocky ascents, and scree slopes, all while enjoying expansive alpine vistas, including views of Lake Barbellino and the striking, heart-shaped Lago di Gelt, which often remains frozen.
To tackle this difficult trail, you need excellent physical fitness, a steady foot, and sturdy hiking boots. Embark on a challenging 12.2-mile (19.7 km) hike through the Orobie Alps, gaining 4585 feet (1398 metres) of elevation over approximately 9 hours and 33 minutes. This difficult traverse begins at Lake Barbellino, where you can spot the unique Sword in the Stone sculpture. Both Rifugio Curò and Rifugio Nani Tagliaferri offer excellent overnight accommodation, allowing you to break up the journey or extend your mountain experience. Consider starting early to make the most of the daylight hours.
This traverse connects two significant mountain refuges, with Rifugio Nani Tagliaferri holding symbolic importance for the local Club Alpino Italiano "Val di Scalve" section, established in 1978. Along the way, you might find the charming Malga Pila, where shepherd Ulisse is known to welcome hikers with coffee and local cheese. The trail crosses between Bergamo province and Valtellina, showcasing diverse alpine landscapes.
