    Hiking

The Barbellino refuge is a beautiful refuge located at 2,131 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Mount Strinato and surrounded by the various giants of the Orobie: Mount Costone, Torena and the Caronella peaks. From here you can go up to the Serio pass, the Caronella pass and the Grasso di Pila pass.

Embark on a difficult hike from Rifugio Alpe Caronella to Lago di Gelt, a challenging 9.8-mile (15.7 km) route with a significant 4787 feet (1459 metres) of elevation gain. This trail takes around 9 hours and 5 minutes to complete, leading you through varied and often technical terrain. You will navigate narrow mule tracks, steep rocky ascents, and scree slopes, all while enjoying expansive alpine vistas, including views of Lake Barbellino and the striking, heart-shaped Lago di Gelt, which often remains frozen.

To tackle this difficult trail, you need excellent physical fitness, a steady foot, and sturdy hiking boots. Some sections are very technical and treacherous, requiring specific equipment and prior mountaineering experience. This route is classified as SAC 4-6, indicating a demanding trek that calls for careful preparation and a good understanding of alpine conditions.

The journey offers more than just physical challenge; it reveals unique natural and historical features. You will discover the distinctive heart shape of Lago di Gelt, often covered in ice, and pass by the Bocchetta di Gelt, which provides a dramatic reveal of the lake. Along the way, you can see the renovated Bivacco Ex Polveriera della Prima Guerra Mondiale, a former World War I powder magazine, and the Bivacco A.E.M., an always-open stone structure near the highest lake in the Orobie Alps.

Embark on a challenging 12.2-mile (19.7 km) hike through the Orobie Alps, gaining 4585 feet (1398 metres) of elevation over approximately 9 hours and 33 minutes. This difficult traverse begins at Lake Barbellino, where you can spot the unique Sword in the Stone sculpture. The route climbs towards Passo Grasso di Pila, offering views of the natural Barbellino lake before descending into Val Belviso with its artificial lake. You will encounter the metal eagle sculpture at Passo di Venano, symbolizing the wild spirit of these mountains.

To access this route, drive to Valbondione, where parking is available near the valley entrance. This demanding hike requires careful planning due to its length and significant elevation changes. Both Rifugio Curò and Rifugio Nani Tagliaferri offer excellent overnight accommodation, allowing you to break up the journey or extend your mountain experience. Consider starting early to make the most of the daylight hours.

This traverse connects two significant mountain refuges, with Rifugio Nani Tagliaferri holding symbolic importance for the local Club Alpino Italiano "Val di Scalve" section, established in 1978. Along the way, you might find the charming Malga Pila, where shepherd Ulisse is known to welcome hikers with coffee and local cheese. The trail crosses between Bergamo province and Valtellina, showcasing diverse alpine landscapes.
