During the city fire of 1840, the city church of St. Johannis on the market also fell victim to the flames. As early as 1843-1845, a new church was built outside the city on the western slope of the Schönberg according to plans by Carl Alexander Heideloff, who chose the St. Lorenz Church in Nuremberg as a model. The church was inaugurated on Pentecost Sunday, May 11, 1845.
