In order to trace the namesake of NEPTUN for this station on the planetary hiking trail, we have to go far back into European history: namely to Roman antiquity. The pre-Christian mythology of that era referred to NEPTUNE as the god of the sea; in Greek mythology, he corresponded to POSEIDON (who, however, was not given the honor of having a planet named after him).
