The bunker route starts at the church of Gijzenzele: a 13 km walk that leads past several bunkers that were part of the Bruggenhoofd Gent, a defense line that was built in the mid-1930s.

The cemetery contains one British war dead from the First World War. His grave is listed with the CWGC under Gijzenzele Churchyard.
