The name of the river probably derives from the Middle Low German rét, which means High German Ried - stream overgrown with reeds. The name has been changed many times, in 1790 the “Räder-Fluss” or “Dieräder” is used, which could indicate an origin of Rad... (similar to the presumed origins of the names of the towns of Radeberg and Radeburg on the river).

The fork weir regulated an even flow of water into the Große and Kleine Röder, which was of great importance for the adjacent mills and hydropower plants as well as for feeding the ponds (e.g. around Zabeltitz, Frauenhain, Koselitz, Tiefenau, ...). Furthermore, from then on, the amount of water in the flood could be regulated and discharged via the Geißlitz, so that flooding in the Röder lowlands with the villages and agricultural areas could be minimized.
