Neptune is the outermost of the large gas planets. The existence of Neptune was independently predicted by Jean Joseph Leverrier and John Couch Adams due to perturbations in the orbit of Uranus, and on September 23, 1846, Neptune was discovered not far from the predicted location by Johann Galle.
Like Uranus, Neptune's bluish appearance is due to a high proportion of methane in the outer layers of the atmosphere. However, Neptune's atmosphere is much more dynamic and shows structures, such as a large dark spot, that are similar to those on Jupiter.
