On the rugged rocky slopes above the Laber Valley, an ancient church dedicated to St. Martin still stood in 1593. No historical records exist of the unnamed castle site, but it was likely the ancestral seat of the Lords of Laaber and the predecessor of Laaber Castle, built around 1200. It stood above the royal road, known since the early 11th century, which ran along the Black Laber Valley and connected the royal palaces in Regensburg, Nuremberg, Forchheim, and Bamberg.
