    Hiking

The Beech and the Fir Trails intersect at this point. If you have been following the Fir Trail from High Lodge Visitor Centre, it is well worth picking up the Beech Trail for an extra 3.7 miles (6km) to explore Rishbeth Wood and Thetford Warren Lodge before heading back to High Lodge.

Embark on the easy Fir Trail loop from High Lodge, a 3.5-mile (5.7 km) hike that takes about 1 hour and 28 minutes to complete. You'll gain a gentle 109 feet (33 metres) in elevation as you venture deeper into Thetford Forest, leaving behind the busier areas. The path winds through pine trees on a natural forest floor, which can be uneven with roots and soft ground, and potentially muddy in spots. You might also encounter sections of gravel, unpaved, and asphalt surfaces. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and the unique "Future Forest installations," statues based on classical themes, hidden among the trees.

The Fir Trail begins at High Lodge, offering a clear starting point for your adventure. While the trail is generally easy, be prepared for varied terrain including roots, dips, and soft ground, which can be muddy after rain. This makes it unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. It's a good option for building endurance, especially if you're comfortable navigating natural forest obstacles.

What makes this trail notable is its ability to lead you away from the main hub of High Lodge into the more tranquil parts of Thetford Forest. It provides an excellent opportunity for wildlife observation in a quieter setting. The trail also offers flexibility with longer loop options, allowing you to choose a distance that suits your preferences and fitness levels, with some even crossing the Norfolk/Suffolk border.
