"Strunz" was what the Munsterlanders called strontianite, a mineral that was of crucial importance for the extraction of sugar from sugar beet in the second half of the 19th century. The only region in which strontianite was found in such quantity and quality that it was used for mining The southern Münsterland came into question Around 1870, numerous landowners opened smaller and larger mines in Ascheberg, Drensteinfurt and the surrounding area, of which only a few people know today.

The memorial stone commemorates the Maria strontianite mine, which was in operation from 1874-1884.
