    Hiking

Luddesdown is a rural parish in the Kent Downs AONB. The manor house here is reputed to be the oldest continually inhabited house in South England. The surrounding countryside is wonderfully pleasant, with verdant, undulating fields and plenty of wildlife.

I passed through during one of my walks, it's a really nice place, especially during the summer, the whole area is surrounded by countryside and is just a pleasant area to walk through.

Cobham, Cobham Woods & Luddesdown loop — Kent Downs

    280m

Embark on the Cobham, Cobham Woods & Luddesdown loop, a difficult hike that takes you through the varied landscapes of the Kent Downs. This 11.4-mile (18.4 km) route features ancient woodlands, gentle hills, and dramatic chalk downland, offering open countryside views and glimpses of the River Medway. You will gain 905 feet (276 metres) in elevation over approximately 5 hours, passing by historic sites like the grand Cobham Hall and the striking Darnley Mausoleum.

Prepare for a challenging day on the trails, as this longer route is rated difficult due to its distance and elevation. While many paths in the Cobham area are easier, this specific loop requires good fitness. The terrain includes ancient wood pastures and areas of heathland, so wear appropriate footwear. Spring and early summer are particularly pleasant times to hike, with wildflowers and bluebells adding to the scenery.

This trail is rich in history and natural beauty, traversing one of the UK's few remaining ancient wood pastures, Cobham Wood. The area was once frequented by figures like Charles Dickens and Samuel Pepys, and the woods themselves are a Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to veteran trees, diverse flora, and wildlife including stag beetles, owls, and bats. Highland cattle also graze here, helping to maintain the unique woodland pasture.

The Camer Park loop offers a moderate hike through varied Kent Downs landscapes. You will journey through open countryside, ancient parkland, and woodlands, experiencing diverse terrain. The route covers 10.5 miles (17.0 km) with an elevation gain of 847 feet (258 metres), taking about 4 hours and 38 minutes to complete. Expect picturesque views across the Kent Downs, especially as you pass through the vineyards of the Silverhand Estate. This circular walk provides a rewarding experience for those seeking a mix of natural beauty.

Start your hike at Camer Park, where you will find free parking, public toilets, and a cafe, making it a convenient base. Be prepared for varied terrain, including some steep sections where walking poles might be helpful. The trail can get muddy after rain, so wear appropriate footwear to stay comfortable. You will also encounter six stiles and cross a few quiet roads along the way. This route is best enjoyed when the weather is dry to avoid the muddier parts.

This trail is notable for its journey through the historic Luddesdown Village. You will pass its 14th-century church, offering glimpses of rolling hills and fields often dotted with sheep. The route provides a unique opportunity to explore both natural beauty and local heritage within the Kent Downs National Landscape. It is a great option if you are looking for a hike that combines scenic views with a touch of history.
