Embark on the Mount Scott Trail for a moderate hiking experience that leads you to the highest point within Crater Lake National Park. This route spans 4.5 miles (7.2 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 1140 feet (347 metres), typically taking around 2 hours and 21 minutes to complete. You will begin with a gentle walk through a meadow before the path gradually ascends through forests and rocky sections, offering glimpses of wildflowers and distant peaks as you climb.
When planning your visit, be aware that the trail involves a steady incline and some sections are exposed to the sun. It is wise to check current conditions before you go, as snow can persist on the trail late into the season. The path can also have loose dirt and gravel, especially on steeper parts, so appropriate footwear is recommended for a comfortable and safe hike.
From the summit of Mount Scott, you are treated to an expansive panoramic view that allows you to see the entire expanse of Crater Lake. This unique vantage point is one of the few places where the whole lake fits within a camera lens, making it a truly memorable reward for your effort. The trail's prominence offers a distinct perspective on the park's natural grandeur.
