This pretty packed dirt trail winds up above Boronda Lake through the Foothills Nature Preserve. You get a decent amount of shade, especially on this lower section.

The Hiking loop from Enid Pearson-Arastradero Preserve offers a refreshing journey through diverse ecosystems, from sun-drenched grassland savanna to shady broadleaf evergreen forest. You'll traverse natural soil and gravel paths, enjoying gentle undulations and occasional steeper sections, all while keeping an eye out for wildlife near Arastradero Lake. This easy 2.5-mile (4.0 km) hike, with 349 feet (107 metres) of elevation gain, is a perfect way to spend about 1 hour and 10 minutes immersed in nature.

Planning your visit is straightforward, with a main parking lot providing easy trailhead access. The preserve features an interpretive center, restrooms, and a water station for your convenience. It's worth noting that seasonal trails might close after heavy rains, so check conditions if visiting during wet periods. Spring is particularly lovely, with wildflowers adding vibrant splashes of color to the rolling hills.

Beyond the immediate trail, the preserve is a vital habitat for a variety of species, including deer, bobcats, and numerous bird species. From elevated viewpoints, you can catch glimpses of Stanford University, Palo Alto, and the distant San Francisco Bay. For those looking to extend their adventure, Gate D of the preserve offers a connection to the expansive Foothills Park, providing even more exploration opportunities.
