Shrawardine (pronounced Shray-den) is a small village that's well worth a visit to see its interesting church and castle. The castle was built by Henry 1st and known as Castle Isabella by the Anglo-Normans. The church - St Mary's - is a Grade II listed building, mostly 17th century, but with parts dating back to the 13th century.

Embark on the Nesscliffe loop from Shrewsbury, a moderate touring cycling route covering 34.3 miles (55.2 km) with an elevation gain of 1242 feet (379 metres), typically completed in 3 hours and 21 minutes. You will experience a diverse mix of paved and unpaved terrain, winding through woodland trails and heather-covered hills. Expect expansive views over the Shropshire countryside, stretching towards the Welsh hills, with Oliver's Point offering particularly captivating panoramas across the middle Severn Valley.

While the route is generally suitable for touring bikes, be prepared for some unpaved segments, especially on bridleways through the heathland. The research suggests that some parts might even include short, steep, rocky descents, which could require dismounting and walking if you are not on a mountain bike. The area is accessible for cycling, but specific trailhead access or parking details are not provided in the research; plan your start from Shrewsbury accordingly.

This area is rich in history and natural beauty, making your ride more than just a physical challenge. You can explore Nesscliffe Hill Country Park, home to an Iron Age hill fort dating back to 500 BCE, with visible earthworks and stone-lined guard chambers. Look out for Kynaston's Cave, a man-made sandstone hideout linked to the medieval outlaw Humphrey Kynaston. For a historical refreshment stop, The Old 3 Pigeons Pub, with its history from 1405, is conveniently located on the western side of the park.

Embark on the Melverley & Shrawardine loop from Crew Green, a moderate touring bicycle ride that takes you through picturesque countryside along the River Severn and River Vyrnwy. This 19.3-mile (31.1 km) route offers scenic views of undulating hills and traditional hay meadows, with the Powys hills providing a beautiful backdrop. You'll cycle mostly on paved surfaces, but be prepared for some potentially unpaved sections that require good fitness, all while gaining about 507 feet (155 metres) in elevation over approximately 1 hour and 53 minutes.

To make the most of your ride, ensure your touring bicycle is suitable for varied terrain, as some parts might be unpaved. The route is generally accessible, but checking local conditions before you go is always a good idea. You can plan for a stop at The Royal Hill, a scenic pub near Pentre, which is conveniently located along the River Vyrnwy section of the loop. Remember that while the ride is moderate, those unpaved segments will test your fitness.

One of the most unique features of this loop is St Peter's Church in Melverley, a rare black and white timber-framed church dating back to the early 15th century. This historic landmark is one of only two such churches in Shropshire and sits in a charming riverside setting, offering a perfect spot for a break. The route's blend of natural beauty, historical interest, and riverside cycling makes it a well-regarded option for local cyclists.
