Klein Schijn winds its way through the Wouwerse meadows. This nature reserve was once home to Baron Pierre de Caters, the first Belgian aviator. Jan Olieslager and Jules Tyck also made history here in 1908-1909. The first flight on Belgian soil took place a little further away in Sint-Job-in-'t Goor. Baron Peerke de Caters was the first official Belgian aviator. My grandfather, who served at the Caters court, witnessed this from the front row. The tall, stately trees bordering the horse pasture were planted by him. A fond family memory...
