    Road cycling

9 Bar Coffee House is located in the Riverwood neighborhood near the Neuse River Trail. Exit the trail at mile marker 30 and ride up the hill to the village center where it is located. I find it to be a nice destination when I am riding the Neuse River Trail.

Embark on a moderate road cycling adventure along the Neuse River Trail, a route that stretches for 59.7 miles (96.0 km). You will gain 1385 feet (422 metres) in elevation, with an estimated duration of 3 hours and 59 minutes. The trail offers a diverse landscape, guiding you through lush wooded areas, open farmlands, and wetlands, all while cycling alongside the tranquil Neuse River. Keep an eye out for abundant wildlife, especially on the well-maintained boardwalks, and enjoy the unique experience of crossing two picturesque suspension bridges.

Planning your ride is straightforward, as the Neuse River Trail is accessible year-round. You can find convenient parking and access points at various locations, including Horseshoe Farm Road, Buffaloe Road Athletic Park, and Anderson Point Park. Restrooms and drinking water facilities are also available at key points along the route, making it easy to plan your stops and ensure a comfortable journey.

This trail stands out for its close connection to the Neuse River, providing a continuous scenic backdrop for your ride. The presence of extensive boardwalk sections and the two distinctive suspension bridges add a unique character to the route, offering both visual interest and a touch of adventure. It's a fantastic option if you are looking for a longer ride that combines natural beauty with well-maintained infrastructure.

The Sam's Branch Greenway offers a delightful road cycling experience, winding through scenic rural fields often separated by classic white split-rail fences. As you pedal, you'll discover charming community art, including hand-painted wooden fish and a public art garden featuring butterfly-shaped bike racks, adding a unique touch to the journey. The paved trail connects to the Neuse River Greenway, where you can enjoy diverse scenery from lush forests to sunny fields, with opportunities to spot wildlife along its boardwalks.

This moderate 32.4-mile (52.2 km) road cycling loop, starting near Poole Rd at Maybrook Dr, involves about 664 feet (202 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 2 hours and 4 minutes. It's essential to note that while the Sam's Branch Greenway is perfect for road bikes, the internal trails of Williamson Preserve are designed for mountain biking and are not suitable for this route. Always check for current trail conditions or any detours before you set out, as parts of the greenway have seen temporary closures.

What makes this route particularly notable is its role as a vital link in a much larger paved greenway system, connecting the town of Clayton to the extensive Neuse River Greenway Trail. This network is part of both the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and the East Coast Greenway, providing continuous paved cycling routes that stretch for dozens of miles. It's an excellent option for those seeking a long, uninterrupted ride on a well-maintained surface.
