Ely is built on a 23-square-mile island which at 85 feet / 26 m, is the highest land in the Fens. Thanks to this, Ely was not waterlogged like the surrounding Fenland, and was originally an island separated from the mainland, until drained in the 18th century.

Ely Cathedral is a magnificent 11th-century structure in the heart of Ely. The Grade I-listed place of worship is much-celebrated for its Romanesque design and huge scale. For information about visiting the cathedral, head to: elycathedral.org/visit.

Very impressive Cathedral. Visit only with ticket, so make sure you bring enough time. You can peek in at the main door for free though. The surroundings are suprisingly well integrated into the city with people relaxing on the grass in the park and around the main building.
