During the Great War, it was an important stronghold and observation point for the Italian army, overlooking Mount Ortigara, which was held by the Austro-Hungarians. Evidence of this is a network of trenches extending to the foot of Mount Ortigara, and on the opposite side of the mountain, barracks and cave shelters providing protection from enemies.
