Embark on a difficult 15.2-mile (24.5 km) hike along a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail, gaining 2471 feet (753 metres) in elevation. This route, estimated to take 7 hours and 15 minutes, winds through Lassen National Forest, offering varied terrain. You will traverse forests with moss-covered trees and volcanic rock boulders, enjoying views of Lassen Peak and Lake Almanor, with the option to climb Butt Mountain for panoramic vistas.
When planning your visit, be aware that the area was impacted by the Dixie Fire, so you might encounter dusty conditions and fallen tree debris. The side trail leading to Butt Mountain can be challenging due to large talus fields, especially if there is thin snow cover, so prepare for slower progress. While day hiking permits are not usually required for this section, always check for current regulations before you go.
This particular section of the Pacific Crest Trail is notable for its official PCT Midpoint marker, which indicates the distances remaining to Canada and Mexico. The challenging ascent to the summit of Butt Mountain, if you choose to take it, rewards you with expansive 360-degree views, making it a highlight for scenic photography in the region.
