You will spend around 8 hours traversing diverse ecosystems, following the boulder-strewn Middle Saluda River, South Carolina's first designated scenic river. Look for striking views of Cleveland Cliffs and Rainbow Falls along the Rim of the Gap Trail, especially after good rainfall, adding a rewarding visual to your strenuous effort.
This challenging route is located within Jones Gap State Park, so plan your visit accordingly. Backcountry camping is an option on certain trails, but you must secure reservations in advance. Be aware that rocks can become very slippery in wet conditions, and ice may form on parts of the trail during colder months, requiring extra caution.
The trail offers a unique opportunity to explore the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, known for its varied landscapes.
