The Founders Park – Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve loop from Lake Forest offers a wonderfully accessible road cycling experience, perfect for a leisurely ride with plenty of natural beauty. You'll cruise along well-paved paths, taking in the expansive Lake Michigan shoreline, diverse forest preserves, and scenic bluffs. Keep an eye out for the impressive lake overlook from a 70-foot-high bluff, a true highlight of this easy 27.6-mile (44.4 km) route, which only features 533 feet (162 metres) of elevation gain and takes just under two hours to complete.

Planning your ride is straightforward, as the route is primarily on well-maintained paved surfaces. Founders Park provides a good starting point with parking, and the trail is generally suitable for cyclists of all abilities. While the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve has dedicated paved trails for biking, be aware that some grass trails within the preserve are not open to bicycles. This loop is a great option for a relaxed outing, especially during the milder months of spring and autumn.

Beyond the natural beauty, this route also offers a touch of history as it winds through the historic Fort Sheridan district, complete with educational exhibits. The preserve itself is a recognized spot for birdwatching and wildlife observation, adding another layer to your cycling adventure. Plus, the route connects to regional systems like the Robert McClory Bike Path, giving you the flexibility to extend your journey if you're looking for more miles.
