In southern Lusatia, arched bridges secure crossings over rivers and streams with irregular water flows.
Only once, on July 2, 1875, did the village stream in Bertsdorf swell so much after a cloudburst that it caused bridges to collapse. Of the village's 13 stone bridges, a few such arched sandstone bridges with crenellated parapet crowns still span the village stream and blend harmoniously into the village landscape. The builders noted the years of their construction in the keystones of the arches.
