This is the steepest part of the entire Hat Creek Rim section between Old Station and Burney Falls. It follow the historic trail first blazed by pioneers in the mid 19th century. Today it still serves as an important fire break, as is evidenced by the abrupt change in vegetation that survives south of this line, while north of it everything was consumed by series of fires, most dramatically in 2009.
