    Hiking

Postman's Path is a stunning pathway that zigzags over the spectacular coastline of Harris in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The entire thing is a visual exhibition with scenes of mountains, rugged coastline, and still lochs throughout.

Rèinigeadal via Postman's Path — Isle of Harris

    670m

Embark on the Rèinigeadal via Postman's Path, a moderate hike on the Isle of Harris that spans 7.8 miles (12.6 km) with an elevation gain of 2213 feet (674 metres), typically taking 4 hours and 20 minutes to complete. The route winds through a rugged landscape, offering sweeping coastal vistas, views of the Harris mainland, and tranquil lochs. You will encounter varied terrain, from gravel and asphalt to unpaved and boggy sections, including "The Scriob," a series of zigzags designed for safe descent. Keep an eye out for waterfalls, a rushing river, and wildlife like otters and porpoises in Loch Trolamaraig.

This trail is generally considered moderate, though some describe it as moderate to difficult, requiring good fitness. Be prepared for significant elevation changes and undulating terrain with steep gradients, where sure-footedness is important. While some parts are easily accessible, the overall route demands a reasonable level of physical condition to navigate its varied surfaces and inclines.

The Postman's Path holds deep historical significance, as it was, for centuries, the only land route connecting the remote village of Rèinigeadal. Until as late as 1990, Rèinigeadal was the last community in Britain to gain road access, making this path a symbol of the resilience of its inhabitants. Walking this route allows you to retrace the footsteps of the local postman, Kenny MacKay, who delivered mail and supplies three times a week, offering a unique glimpse into the challenging lives of those who lived in this isolated part of Scotland.
