The Lower Monastery of Preveli looks back on a history of over 1,000 years. Its roots probably date back to the late 10th or early 11th century – a time when Crete was still strongly influenced by Byzantine culture.
When the Ottomans conquered Crete in 1649, the monastery was destroyed. But the monks did not give up! They rebuilt it and made it a center of resistance against the occupiers. The monastery became not only a place of prayer, but also a hiding place for freedom fighters and a symbol of the Cretan spirit of resistance.
