Embark on a difficult hike along the Monte Orsiera trail to Lago Ciardunet, a challenging 4.9-mile (7.9 km) journey that climbs 2468 feet (752 metres) and typically takes around 4 hours and 28 minutes to complete. This route immerses you in the rugged beauty of the Orsiera-Rocciavrè Nature Park, leading you through varied terrain towards the high peaks of the Cottian Alps. As you ascend, you'll pass the rustic Bergerie del Ciardonnet, a collection of old mountain huts nestled in the landscape. The ultimate reward is reaching Lago Ciardunet, a serene alpine lake reflecting the surrounding mountains, offering a perfect spot to pause and take in the remote wilderness.
To begin your adventure on the Monte Orsiera trail, you can find parking at the designated area conveniently located near the trailhead. The path is well-marked with red and white trail markers, guiding you along this ancient route through the wilderness. While the trail is accessible for much of the year, checking local conditions, especially for snow at higher elevations, is always a good idea before you set out. Starting your hike early in the morning is recommended to allow ample time to complete the route and enjoy the views.
This trail offers a deep dive into one of Piedmont's most treasured wilderness areas, connecting you to the broader network maintained by the Club Alpino Italiano. While the name Monte Orsiera translates to "Mountain of the bears," these creatures disappeared centuries ago; today, you are more likely to spot chamois, marmots, or even wolves that have returned to these mountains. The route also leads you towards Colle dell'Orsiera, where remnants of old fortifications hint at the region's historical significance, including a battle that took place in 1747.
