The Ziegelsee is home to pretty much all local fish species. The lake is particularly valued for its pikeperch and carp stocks.
The entire south bank is the quay of the Möllner port. Here, depending on the season, grain, seeds or fertilizers are shipped via the Elbe-Lübeck Canal.
Historically, the lake was once a lake together with the city lake. It was divided for the construction of the railway line.
